Web Accessibility Guidelines – Colombia

Overview:

Colombia’s Web Accessibility Guidelines ensure that government and public sector websites are accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. These rules help make online content easier to use for individuals with visual, hearing, motor, or cognitive impairments.

 Key Requirements in Simple Language:

1. Text Alternatives: Images, videos, and audio must have text descriptions (like alt text or captions) so screen readers can explain them to blind users.

2. Keyboard Navigation: Websites should work without a mouse, allowing users to navigate using only a keyboard.

3. Readable Content: Text must be clear, with options to resize fonts and good color contrast for people with low vision.

4. Video & Audio Accessibility: Videos should have subtitles, and audio content should have transcripts.

5. Consistent Structure: Websites should be well-organized with clear headings and labels for easier understanding.

6. Avoid Time Limits: Users should have enough time to read and interact with content without being rushed.

7. Compatibility with Assistive Tools: Websites must work with screen readers, voice commands, and other assistive technologies.

Important Dates:

- These guidelines were published by MINTIC (Ministry of Information and Communications Technology) to align with international standards like WCAG 2.1.

- Public institutions in Colombia are expected to comply with these accessibility rules to ensure inclusive digital services.
